We are absolutely thrilled to be able to introduce you to one of our newest suppliers for this #meetthemaker! She is @lovekikidesigns and she makes these stunning earrings and hair slides! We’re a little bit (read a lot) smitten with them all and think she has totally nailed her inspiration for her makes bringing, ‘joy to those who wear them’.
Please can you tell us a little bit about you and your brand?
I’m Dominika, I moved from Poland and have lived in different parts of the UK. When I was younger, I went to Art School where my love for art and design has led me to designing and making my own jewellery. I opened Love Kiki Designs as a business in 2018 and have a home studio in Worcestershire where I make all of my items by hand.
Please can you tell us about your inspiration for your business?
I work through current and future trends, finding colours and patterns that are popular and combining them to create my own twist. I love bold colours and think that they can really add to an outfit. My love for fashion has led me here and I hope that my creations bring joy to those who wear them.
What is the ethos behind your brand?
Individualism is a big driving factor in most of my designs, looking to give the wearer a sense of self expression. These items also make lovely gifts for friends or family and I work hard to make sure my price point is accessible for most people. I work to produce as little waste as possible and re-use offcuts as much as I can.
What is the most enjoyable thing about your business?
I love spending time working on new designs. My brain is full of ideas and when they are out of my head and on my desk in front of me it makes me so happy to see my thoughts come to life. Meeting customers and shop owners who stock my items at markets and trade shows is lovely and makes my business feel like it’s bigger than just within my small home studio.
What are your top tips for anyone wanting to start their own creative business?
It is hard work and relentless hours so it is key to set achievable targets, I feel proud when each order gets taken to the post office and ticked off the list. I love meeting customers so I think that craft markets are a great way to build your business and get to know your customer base and test products. I love expressing my ideas so use deadlines throughout the year to bring out new collections based on trend forecasts and lots of background research.
How do you get yourself out of any creative slumps?
I listen to a lot of music and I love watching fashion and art based tv shows to give me some inspiration. Social media is also a great tool for finding trends and connecting to fellow designers.
What songs feature most on your playlist for when you are working?
Running up That Hill - Kate Bush
I am an 80s child so often listen to 80s playlists too for some feel good songs.
What do you like doing in your downtime away from your business?
I have 2 cats who keep me company in my home studio, and love to play and cuddle when I need a break from working. Cooking and taking walks really switches me off from the stress of running your own business. I’m getting married this August so I am spending a lot of time wedding planning too!
What is next for your business?
I have recently been to two trade shows so we now have a lot more wholesalers stocking my items all over the UK which is exciting. I’m also working with a few museums and galleries in London on bespoke collections to sell alongside artist exhibitions which I absolutely love designing and I’m so thrilled to be a part of.
